How League of Legends Accounts Gain Value Through Skins, Rarity, and Progression

League of Legends remains one of the most popular games in the world. Some 11 million players take to Summoner's Rift every day. And a big part of that is how much players like to spend on skins, and the time they put into ranking up.

So what are the main ways accounts gain value? This piece will look at three main reasons, and then briefly discuss why insane values and skin gambling never took off in LoL compared to Counter Strike. This is what you need to know about how LoL accounts are valued.

Skins are the Main Value Driver of a LoL Account

Basic LoL champion skins cost around $2 worth of Riot Points (RP). Ultimate skins can cost several thousand RP or around $200 for the fanciest bundles.

Players can build big collections of these over the years. Especially since the introduction of Hextech Crafting meaning players can earn skins as they play. There are currently 1650 LoL skins.

Some skins are released in the store frequently, while others rarely. The most rare and valuable skins though are ones that were given out to players in the early days of the game.

King Rammus. Judgement Kayle. Victorious Jarvan - all early season 1 or even beta awards, from way back in 2009 that are worth a little bit today. They came out long enough ago that many current LoL prodigies weren't even born at the time.

Exceedingly rare skins like PAX Twisted Fate are worth upwards of a few thousand dollars - although they only come up for sale rarely as they are sold with accounts rather than individually.

Some other rare skins worth potentially $50 or more in value added to an account include:

  • Silver Kayle (only came with the 2009 preorder copy of LoL)
  • UFO Corki
  • Rusty Blitzcrank
  • The other PAX skins (Jax, Sivir) which were given out as codes at conventions in 2009

Fun Note: The most common LoL skin is Unchained Alistar, which players could get from subscribing the to the Riot Games YouTube channel. That has since been discontinued, but hundreds of thousands of people bagged it.

Secondary Markets and Gambling Games

Interestingly, although people do buy and sell League accounts there is no trading or gambling scene like there are Counter Strike casinos.

So, for example, Canadian players might visit Casino.org Canada to get comparative and expert information on all the online casino options available. Including game collections, bonuses and other features.

Where CS casinos got so big the community developed their own review sites, Riot has not allowed any kind of similar systems to be used in trading, selling or buying League of Legends skins and accounts. So any betting on skin or account trading has been done informally. And nowhere near the extent of actual casinos for skins like in Counter Strike.

League of Legends betting is a legitimate thing though, and lots of people use licensed sportsbooks to bet on professional LoL games every day. But gambling for skins is very much frowned upon by Riot, and doesn't happen in any organized sense.

Rarity Drives the Biggest Value but Rank is Considered Too

As well as skins though, other content is considered when determining a LoL account's resale value. For example, owning all the champions (172) would take a new or returning player some time to complete. So paying for them is the value of that time.

Even a level 30 account ready for ranked play can sell for $20 to $30. A long-term valuable LoL account could have taken thousands of hours to build up, which means discontinued and legacy rewards content as well as all the free and purchased skins.

Another thing is rank. Unsurprisingly, if you've ever played more than a couple games of LoL, people will genuinely pay to have a higher ranked account than they actually deserve. Accounts that reached the top levels like Challenger can be worth thousands - especially if that's also coupled with old or rare skins.

However, Riot does frown on most of this so buyers of accounts should beware.

In general, rare skins are more valuable until you get to the very highest ranks. The highest ceiling of value would be around $5000 for a Challenger account with several rare skins. But then the difficulty of obtaining those, means they rarely come up on auction sites.

Riot now releases around 100 skins a year. Some of these will sell in the official in-client store for hundreds of dollars of RP. This also increases the value of the very rarest skins, while more mass produced older skins will likely lose value.

Long term investment, a high ranked position and super rare legacy or even no longer available content from Season 1 will be worth more than accounts that bought all the skins from the last few years.
