LoL Name Change

Check your new Riot ID and your 90-day timer. Your League of Legends name is your Riot ID. Type the new one to check it against Riot's rules and see if it is free, find out when your next free change is due, then save it on Riot's account page.

The name check, the rules and the 90-day timer need JavaScript; the guide and the FAQ below work without it.

How to Change Your LoL Name in 4 Steps

You change your League of Legends name by changing your Riot ID on Riot's account website. The whole change takes about a minute:

  1. Check that the name you want is free. Type it in the box at the top of this page, or in our LoL name checker: with a tag it checks that exact Riot ID, without one it tries 20 tags at once.
  2. Sign in at account.riotgames.com with your Riot account.
  3. In the Riot ID box at the top of the account page, type the new name and the new tag (the part after the #).
  4. Click Save Changes. The new name shows in League the next time you log in.

If Riot says the Riot ID is already in use, keep the name and try another tag: only the full Name#TAG has to be unique.

Change Your Name From the League Client

In the League client, open the Shop, click the Account button and pick the Riot ID Change offer. It costs nothing: the client opens a popup that sends you to Riot's account website, where you type the new name and tag as in the steps above. The change itself always happens on the website.

The Riot Mobile app can't change your Riot ID. On a phone, open account.riotgames.com in the browser instead. Players with a guest account in a mobile game change it in the game: in Wild Rift through Profile, your profile picture and Change name, in TFT mobile through Settings and Change Riot ID.

Is Changing Your LoL Name Free? The 90-Day Rule

Yes. A Riot ID change is free, and you get one every 90 days, counted from your last change. There is no paid name change any more: Riot's support pages say there is no way to change a Riot ID outside the free change.

  • The old paid summoner name change (in Blue Essence or RP) ended when League moved to Riot IDs on November 20, 2023. That day every player got one free change, however recently they had changed their name before.
  • Riot first announced one free change a year plus paid changes, then dropped that plan in November 2023 for the free change every 90 days. Guides that still mention 365 days, 30 days or a price describe plans that never stayed.
  • If someone uses your Riot ID to harass you and your 90 days are not over, Riot Player Support can change it for you through a ticket.

Riot ID Rules: Name, Tag and Characters

A Riot ID is a name of 3 to 16 characters and a tag of 3 to 5 letters or numbers, written Name#TAG. The name does not have to be unique; the full combination does.

Riot ID rules for a name change (Riot support, checked October 2026)
RuleLimitExample
Name length3 to 16 charactersHide on bush
Tag length3 to 5 characters#GGWP
CharactersLetters and numbers; no # in the nameKai'Sa becomes KaiSa
UniqueOnly the full Name#TAGAhri#EUW and Ahri#MID are two players
Region tagsAfter you change your tag you can't go back to a region code#EUW, #NA1, #KR
How oftenOnce every 90 days, free

The region codes you can't return to are BR, LAS, LAN, OCE, NA, EUW, EUNE, TR, RU, KR, JP, PBE, BR1, LA1, LA2, OC1, NA1, ME, TW, VN and SEA. If you type one of them, Riot answers that the Riot ID is already in use.

Name Already in Use? Change the Tag

A taken name is almost never a dead end: the same name with another tag is a different Riot ID. Short or popular names are usually taken with the region tags (#EUW, #NA1) and free with a tag of your own, such as #MID, #OTP or a number.

Riot IDs don't expire, so a name held by an account that stopped playing years ago stays taken. It only frees up if Riot deletes that account. Type the name without a tag in our LoL name checker to see at once which of 20 common tags are still free.

Why Riot Rejects or Changes a Name

Riot refuses names that break its naming rules, and it can rename an account later if a name gets past the filter. Riot's names FAQ lists what is not allowed:

  • The word Riot, also with lookalike letters.
  • Personal information, such as a real name or an address.
  • Pretending to be an esports pro, even if the system accepts the name.
  • Hate speech, harassment, vulgar or sexual words, profanity and references to hard drugs, including wordplay that hides them.

Players can report a name in champion select or after a game (Inappropriate Name). A reported name that breaks the rules is sent for renaming, and repeated reports can lead to a penalty. If you think Riot changed your name unfairly, contact Player Support.

Does It Change Valorant and TFT Too?

Yes. Your Riot ID is one name for your whole Riot account, so a change shows in League of Legends, TFT, Valorant and every other Riot game. You can't have one name in League and another in Valorant.

Your friends keep you on their friends list under the new name. Your login username stays the same: it is not your Riot ID, and Riot does not let you change it.

What Happens to Your Old Name

Changing your Riot ID only renames your account: the account, its friends and everything on it stay the same. Riot does not say when, or whether, another player can take the Riot ID you give up, so don't count on getting it back once you change.

If you only want to hide your name, for example on stream, League and TFT have options for that in Settings, General, System: Hide My Name, Hide Other Player's Names and Hide My Identifying Info. They don't use up your 90-day change.

Summoner Name vs Riot ID

League replaced summoner names with Riot IDs on November 20, 2023. Each player's Riot ID became their first summoner name plus a tag for their starting server, such as #NA1 or #EUNE, unless they already had a Riot ID from Valorant or another Riot game, which took priority.

That is why many old accounts still carry a region tag, and why "change your summoner name" now means changing your Riot ID. In a game, players see the name above your champion; the full Name#TAG shows in the client and on profiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change my LoL name?

Sign in at account.riotgames.com, type the new name and tag in the Riot ID box and click Save Changes. From the League client, the Riot ID Change offer in the Shop's Account section takes you to the same page.

Is changing your LoL name free?

Yes. Riot ID changes are free, one every 90 days. There is no paid name change any more.

How often can I change my Riot ID?

Once every 90 days, counted from your last change. Player Support can make an exception if someone uses your Riot ID to harass you.

How long can a LoL name be?

The name can have 3 to 16 characters and the tag 3 to 5 letters or numbers.

Why does Riot say my name is already in use?

Someone already has that exact Name#TAG, or you typed a region tag such as EUW or NA1, which you can't go back to after changing your tag. Keep the name and try another tag.

Does changing my Riot ID change my Valorant name?

Yes. Your Riot ID is the same in every Riot game, so the new name shows in League, TFT and Valorant.

Can I change my name on mobile?

Not in the Riot Mobile app. Open account.riotgames.com in your phone's browser instead. Guest accounts in Wild Rift and TFT mobile change their name in the game's profile or settings.

Can I change my login username?

No. Your username is only for signing in, and Riot does not let you change it. Only the Riot ID changes.

Can I get my old name back?

Only if nobody has taken it by the time your next change is due, 90 days later. Riot does not say that it keeps old names for you, so check the name first in our LoL name checker.
