Iron to Diamond have four divisions each, from IV (lowest) to I (highest). Master, Grandmaster and Challenger have no divisions. That makes 31 steps from Iron IV to Challenger.

The shares come from our own daily count of every ranked Solo/Duo player on Riot's ladders, in every region. The full breakdown by division and region is on the LoL rank distribution page.
- Iron, Bronze and Silver hold 3.6%, 15.7% and 20.8% of ranked players respectively.
- Gold holds 23.4% of players, and the median player today is Gold III.
- Platinum and Emerald are the upper middle. Emerald was added in 2023 between Platinum and Diamond to split what used to be a very crowded Platinum.
- Diamond is the last rank with divisions. Diamond IV or higher is the top 4.7% of players.
- Master, Grandmaster and Challenger are the apex tiers. Together they are the top 0.74%.
Is IV or I higher? How divisions work
Division I is the highest division of a rank and division IV the lowest. You climb Gold IV, Gold III, Gold II, Gold I and then move to Platinum IV. So Iron I is better than Iron IV, and Bronze I is better than Bronze IV.
- Each division is worth 100 LP. Reaching 100 LP moves you up one division straight away. Leftover LP carries over, so a +28 win at 90 LP leaves you on 18 LP in the next division.
- There are no promotion series any more. The old best-of-3 and best-of-5 series were removed, so climbing is just LP.
- Demotion inside a rank happens when a loss takes you below 0 LP: at 5 LP a 20 LP loss drops you one division with 85 LP.
- Dropping a whole rank is softened by tier demotion protection. When it does happen you land in division I of the rank below with 25, 50 or 75 LP, depending on how the game rates your skill.
How LP and MMR decide how fast you climb
LP (League Points) is the visible number that moves you between divisions. MMR is the hidden rating the matchmaker uses, and it decides how much LP each game is worth. Riot does not show MMR anywhere in the client.
- MMR and rank match: wins and losses are worth about the same LP.
- MMR above your rank: you gain more LP per win and lose less per loss until your rank catches up.
- MMR below your rank: you gain less and lose more until your win rate levels out.
- Aegis of Valor (Season 3 2026): a win with Aegis active now gives double LP. It no longer reduces LP losses as it did earlier in the year.
- Consolation LP: if a teammate is punished for going AFK, leaving or intentional feeding, the rest of the team gets the lost LP back, up to a weekly cap.
Want to know if your MMR is above or below your rank? The LoL MMR checker estimates it from your recent games and shows the LP you should expect per win and loss.
Master, Grandmaster and Challenger
Master, Grandmaster and Challenger are the apex tiers. They have no divisions and no LP cap: your LP keeps counting up. You reach Master by getting 100 LP in Diamond I. Grandmaster and Challenger are seats, not thresholds: each region has a fixed number, handed out to the highest LP players when the ladder refreshes every 24 hours.
| Region | Grandmaster seats | Challenger seats |
|---|---|---|
| NA, EUW, KR, OCE, SEA | 700 | 300 |
| BR, TR, LAN, LAS | 500 | 200 |
| EUNE, JP, RU | 500 | 50 |
- Minimum LP: Grandmaster needs at least 400 LP and Challenger at least 800 LP, on top of beating the lowest player already holding a seat. Riot raised these from 200 and 500 LP in Season 2 2026.
- Today's real cut-offs: the lowest Grandmaster sits at 935 LP and the lowest Challenger at 1524 LP, on average across regions.
- Leaving Master: after three protected games, dropping below 0 LP sends you back to Diamond I.
- No duo at the top: Grandmaster and Challenger players must queue alone in Solo/Duo. Master players can only duo with Masters within 400 LP or Diamond I players under 200 LP.
Placements, demotion and decay
Placement games
New ranked players play 5 placement games per queue. You cannot lose LP in placements, and the highest rank they can give is Diamond III. Your rank from the previous year is taken into account.
Decay
Only Diamond and the apex tiers decay. Every ranked game banks days of protection; when the bank runs out you start losing LP each day you do not play.
| Rank | Days banked per game | Maximum bank | LP lost per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond | 7 | 28 days | 50 LP |
| Master, Grandmaster, Challenger | 1 | 14 days | 75 LP |
Decay only lowers your LP, never your MMR. Iron to Emerald players can stop playing for as long as they like without losing rank.
Solo/Duo and Flex ranks
Solo/Duo and Flex are two separate ladders with separate ranks and separate MMR. When people ask about their rank they almost always mean Solo/Duo, and that is the ladder counted on this page.
- Solo/Duo allows one friend at most. Iron and Bronze can duo with players up to two tiers higher; from Diamond up your duo must be within two divisions of you.
- Flex allows parties of 1, 2, 3 or 5 (never 4). There are no rank limits up to Diamond; to queue with a Master player you must be at least Emerald.
Requirements to play ranked
- Summoner level 30.
- At least 20 owned champions.
- At least 10 full normal Summoner's Rift games.
Once you meet all three, the ranked queues unlock and your 5 placement games start.
Ranked in 2026: seasons and resets
2026 has three ranked seasons, but only one full rank reset.
- Season 1 (from 8 January 2026): soft reset for everyone. Visible ranks dropped while MMR mostly stayed, followed by 5 placement games.
- Season 2 (patch 26.9): hard reset of the apex tiers in NA, EUW, EUNE, BR, LAN and TR. Every Master, Grandmaster and Challenger player went back to Master 0 LP, and the Grandmaster and Challenger minimums rose to 400 and 800 LP.
- Season 3 (from 29 July 2026, patch 26.15): no reset. Ranks and LP carried over and Aegis of Valor switched to double LP on wins.
Because Season 3 had no reset, the ladder keeps drifting upwards as players climb, which you can follow day by day on the LoL rank distribution page.
What rank is average, and what is a good rank?
The average (median) ranked player is Gold III today, and the most crowded division is Gold IV. Half of all ranked Solo/Duo players are below that point.
- Gold or higher puts you in the top 59.8%.
- Platinum or higher is the top 36.4%.
- Emerald or higher is the top 17.9%.
- Diamond IV or higher is the top 4.7%.
- Master or higher is the top 0.74%.
