What Is a Counter Pick?

A counter pick is a champion chosen because it does well against a champion the enemy team has already locked in, most often the opponent in your own lane. In ranked draft the teams pick in turns, so a player who picks after their lane opponent can see it and answer it. A counter usually wins through its kit: range against a melee champion, sustain against poke, crowd control against a dash-heavy assassin.

A counter is a lean, not a guarantee. The win rates on these pages are averages over many games: a counter that wins 55% of its games against a champion still loses almost half of them, and knowing the matchup well counts too.

How to Counter Pick in Champion Select

  1. Wait for your lane opponent if you can: a later pick in draft sees more of the enemy team.
  2. Open the opponent's counters page (or use the picker above) and look at the champions you already play well.
  3. Prefer a counter with many games behind its win rate: a number from a few dozen games can still be luck.
  4. Check the rest of the enemy team: a lane counter that has no answer to the enemy jungler or damage type may not be the best pick.
  5. If none of your champions counters the opponent, a champion you know well is often the better choice than one you rarely play.

How We Calculate Counters

A counter here is a lane matchup: two champions in the same position on opposite teams, in the same game. Our job reads about 25 ranked Solo/Duo games a minute from Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster and Challenger players of every region and counts, for every pair of lane opponents, the games and who won. Win rates from team compositions (who won when a champion was anywhere on the other team) are left out.

A matchup is listed from 30 games. Its win rate is pulled toward what the two champions' overall lane win rates predict, as if it had 50 more games that went that way, and the lists are ordered by that adjusted value, so a pair with few games doesn't jump to the top by luck. The tables show the real win rate and the games.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a counter pick in LoL?

A champion chosen because it does well against a champion the enemy team has already picked, usually the opponent in your lane. In ranked draft a later pick can see the enemy's choices and answer them.

Where do these counters come from?

From real lane matchups in ranked Solo/Duo games of Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster and Challenger players of every region, counted every day. Each matchup shows its win rate and the number of games behind it.

How many games does a matchup need?

A matchup is listed from 30 games. Its win rate is pulled toward what the two champions' lane win rates predict until it has many more games, so a few lucky games don't make a champion look like a hard counter.

Should you always counter pick?

Not always. A counter is a lean, not a guarantee: a champion you know well often does better than a counter you rarely play, and the rest of the enemy team matters too.

How often are the counters updated?

New games are counted all day; each champion's matchups are read again every two hours. A new patch starts once it has enough games.
