How the LoL Name Generator Works
Pick a style, and the generator writes 12 League of Legends names, each with a tag, that all follow Riot's Riot ID rules. Choose a champion to get names for its mains, a Runeterra region for lore names in that region's sound, and the length, spaces and numbers you want.
- Choose a style: cool, funny, champion main, lore, short or cute.
- Optionally pick a champion and a region, and turn spaces or numbers on or off.
- Click Generate names, then More names for a new batch.
- Click Check on a name you like: it tells you at once if that Name#TAG is free. If it is taken, Free tags shows which tags are still free for the same name.
- Save the names you like, or copy a link that shows the same list to a friend.
When you have one, change your LoL name on Riot's account page. The check only means nobody holds that Riot ID right now; Riot can still refuse a name that breaks its naming rules.
Riot ID Rules: Name Length, Tag and Characters
A Riot ID is a name of 3 to 16 characters plus a tag of 3 to 5 letters or numbers, written Name#TAG. Only the full combination has to be unique, so the same name can exist many times with different tags.
| Rule | Limit | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Name length | 3 to 16 characters | Silent Blade |
| Tag length | 3 to 5 letters or numbers | #MID, #2026 |
| Characters | Letters, numbers and spaces; no apostrophes or # | Kai'Sa becomes KaiSa |
| Region tags | Not given back once you change your tag | #EUW, #NA1, #KR |
| Unique | Only the full Name#TAG | Ember#MID and Ember#JGL are two players |
The generator never suggests a region tag such as EUW or NA1, and it leaves out names with the word Riot, which Riot doesn't allow.
Name Styles Explained
- Cool: an adjective and a noun, such as Crimson Specter or Silent Fang.
- Funny: League slang and jokes every player gets, such as Jungle Diff or Ward Hunter.
- Champion main: names for one champion's players, from its name and its title, such as Ahri Enjoyer.
- Lore: made-up names in the sound of a Runeterra region: hard for Noxus, soft for Ionia, Nordic for the Freljord.
- Short: 3 to 7 letters, the names that are hardest to find free.
- Cute: soft words such as Petal Moon or Honey Poro.
Funny LoL Names
Funny League names work best when every player gets the joke at once: slang, a famous mistake or a mood. A few from the generator's lists:
- Jungle Diff
- Pls Gank Me
- Mute All Gaming
- Flash On D
- Tower Hugger
- Baron Thief
- One More Game
- Not A Smurf
- Gank Me Maybe
- Copium Warden
Cool LoL Names
Cool names pair a strong adjective with a noun from fantasy or the Rift. Short ones are usually taken with the common tags, so check them with a tag of your own:
- Crimson Specter
- Silent Fang
- Frozen Requiem
- Ashen Warden
- Obsidian Talon
- Lunar Ronin
- Restless Echo
- Scarlet Tempest
- Hollow Crown
- Endless Vortex
Names for Champion Mains (OTP)
Pick a champion and the generator builds names from its name and its title, the way one-trick players name themselves. Apostrophes and dots drop out, as Riot IDs can't hold them: Kai'Sa becomes KaiSa and Dr. Mundo becomes DrMundo.
- Yasuo Main
- OneTrick Ahri
- Thresh OTP
- Jinx Enjoyer
- Not Teemo
- The Unforgiven
- Lil Annie
- Only Zed
The tag then often uses the champion's first letters, such as #YAS or #AHRI.
Runeterra Lore Names by Region
Lore names are made up from syllables that sound like each region of Runeterra, so they read like a champion from there without copying one. Noxus gets hard sounds (Drakus, Morrax), Ionia soft ones (Aishin, Mirei), the Freljord Nordic endings (Ulfheim, Sigvald) and the Void the clicks of its creatures.
Short LoL Names (3 to 7 Letters)
Short names are the most wanted and the most taken. A short name almost always exists already with the region tags, but it is often still free with a tag of your own. Generate short names, then use Free tags on the one you like to see which tags are open.
Riot ID Tag Ideas
A good tag is short, easy to say and yours: a role, your champion's letters, a number you like or a word. The generator suggests one with every name:
- Your role: #MID, #JGL, #TOP, #ADC, #SUP.
- Your champion: #YAS for Yasuo, #AHRI for Ahri.
- A word: #OTP, #GGWP, #MAIN.
- A number: #777, #2026, or any 3 to 5 digits.
- Not a region code: once you change your tag, Riot doesn't give EUW, NA1 or the other region tags back.
What to Do When Your Name Is Taken
Keep the name and change the tag: the same name with another tag is a different Riot ID. Click Free tags under a taken name to see at once which of 20 common tags are free, or try a tag of your own in our LoL name checker. Riot IDs don't expire, so a taken name only frees up if Riot deletes the account that holds it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a League of Legends name generator?
Yes: this page. It writes League names in six styles, each with a tag that follows Riot's rules, and checks in one click whether a Name#TAG is free.
How long can a LoL name be?
The name can have 3 to 16 characters and the tag 3 to 5 letters or numbers.
What characters can a Riot ID use?
Letters, numbers and spaces. Apostrophes, dots and the # can't be part of the name, so Kai'Sa becomes KaiSa.
What is a good Riot ID tag?
Something short and yours: your role (#MID), your champion's letters (#YAS), a word (#OTP) or a number. Avoid region codes such as EUW or NA1: once you change your tag, Riot doesn't give them back.
Can two players have the same name?
Yes, with different tags. Only the full Name#TAG has to be unique.
Why does a free name get rejected?
A free result only means nobody holds that Riot ID right now. Riot still refuses names that break its rules, such as offensive words, the word Riot or pretending to be a pro player, and someone may take the name between your check and your change.
How do I change my LoL name to a generated one?
Change your Riot ID on Riot's account page: type the new name and tag in the Riot ID box and save. Our LoL name change tool walks you through it and tells you when your next free change is due.
Is changing your Riot ID free?
Yes, once every 90 days. There is no paid name change.
