The cutoff is a projection: the LP of the last seat if Riot recalculated the ladder now. It moves every time the players around it win or lose, so we read the ladders again every 15 minutes.
How the LP Cutoff Works
Grandmaster and Challenger are seats, not LP thresholds. Each region has a fixed number of each. Once a day Riot ranks every Master, Grandmaster and Challenger player of the region by LP and hands out the Challenger seats to the highest, then the Grandmaster seats to the next ones. Everyone else stays in Master.
The cutoff is the LP of the player in the last seat. On EUW, with 300 Challenger and 700 Grandmaster seats, the Challenger cutoff is the LP of the 300th player and the Grandmaster cutoff the LP of the 1,000th. A seat also needs a minimum LP, so in a region with few apex players the cutoff can be the minimum itself.
You climb to Master with 100 LP in Diamond I, as the LoL ranks guide explains. From there your LP has no cap, and the cutoff tells you how far ahead the last Grandmaster or Challenger player is.
Minimum LP for Grandmaster and Challenger
In Solo/Duo a Grandmaster seat needs at least 400 LP and a Challenger seat at least 800 LP. Riot raised these from 200 and 500 LP in Season 2 2026 (patch 26.9), when the apex tiers of NA, EUW, EUNE, BR, LAN and TR went back to Master 0 LP.
Flex kept the old minimums of 500 LP for Challenger and 200 LP for Grandmaster. In regions where Flex has fewer apex players than seats, such as JP, OCE and RU, the lowest Flex players sit at or just above those minimums and the cutoff is the minimum itself.
When the Grandmaster and Challenger Ladder Updates
Riot recalculates Grandmaster and Challenger once every 24 hours, separately in each region. Promotions and demotions only happen then: between two updates, a Master player above the cutoff stays in Master and a Challenger player below it keeps the seat.
Riot does not publish the exact time, so we detect it: when the players holding Grandmaster and Challenger seats change between two of our readings, the ladder was recalculated. The time of day of the recent updates gives the next one, shown on each region's page. On NA we saw it at 07:00 UTC, which is midnight in Los Angeles.
Grandmaster and Challenger Seats per Region
| Region | Grandmaster seats | Challenger seats |
|---|---|---|
| NA, EUW, KR, SEA | 700 | 300 |
| BR, EUNE, TR, LAN, LAS | 500 | 200 |
| JP, RU, OCE | 100 | 50 |
| VN | 700 | 300 |
| TW | 500 | 200 |
| ME | 100 | 50 |
Riot publishes the seats of the first eleven regions. OCE holds 50 Challenger and 100 Grandmaster players, although one part of Riot's support page gives it 300 and 700. VN, TW and ME have no published numbers; their rows are the size of their lists when full.
| Region | Grandmaster seats | Challenger seats |
|---|---|---|
| EUW, KR, BR, VN | 500 | 200 |
| Every other region | 100 | 50 |
SEA is the exception in Flex: on 11 October 2026 it listed 129 Challenger players, more than the 50 seats Riot gives for most regions, so its page uses the size of the list.
Lowest Challenger Now vs Projected Cutoff
Two numbers answer "how much LP for Challenger", and most sites mix them up. The lowest Challenger now is the LP of the weakest player holding a seat today. The projected cutoff is the LP of the last seat if the ladder were recalculated now.
They differ because seats only change at the daily update. During the day, Master players can climb above the lowest Challenger without getting a seat, and Challenger players can lose LP without losing theirs. To know whether you will be promoted at the next update, compare your LP with the projected cutoff.
Ties and the exact moment of the update are not public, so the projection can miss by a few LP. Players at the same LP as the last seat may land on either side of it.
LP Decay in Master, Grandmaster and Challenger
Apex players lose 75 LP a day once their decay bank is empty. Each ranked game banks 1 day, up to 14. A player who stops playing drops below the cutoff within days and gives up the seat at the next update.
Decay pulls the cutoff down a little when many top players stop at once, for example at the end of a season. The rest of the time active players keep pushing it up, which is why the cutoff usually rises from week to week.
Why the EUW Cutoff Is Higher
The cutoff rises with the number of players chasing the same seats. EUW, NA and KR all have 300 Challenger seats, but EUW has the largest pool of Master players: Riot's list for EUW reaches its limit of 10,000 Master players. More strong players climbing against the same 300 seats push the last one higher: 2,374 LP on EUW against 1,858 LP on NA today.
Regions with fewer seats can still have a high cutoff when their pool is big for its size, as EUNE does with 200 Challenger seats at 1,978 LP.
How We Calculate the Cutoff
- Every 15 minutes we read the Challenger, Grandmaster and Master lists of every region from Riot's API (league-v4), for Solo/Duo and Flex.
- We sort all those players by LP and take the LP of the last Challenger seat and the last Grandmaster seat, among the players with at least the minimum LP. That is the projected cutoff.
- We also keep the lowest LP listed in each tier, the number of players less than 50 LP below each cutoff, and whether the ladder was recalculated since the last reading.
- Regions that Riot merged into another one, such as the Philippines and Thailand into SEA, answer with the same ladder and are counted once.
We do not store player names, only LP. The history before 11 October 2026 comes from our daily count of every ranked player, which kept the lowest LP of each tier; the full count is on the LoL rank distribution page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Challenger cutoff on EUW today?
2,374 LP at 16:00 UTC on October 11, 2026, the LP of the 300th player on the EUW ladder. NA needs 1,858 LP and KR 1,841 LP.
How much LP do you need for Grandmaster?
It depends on the region: today 1,759 LP on EUW, 1,245 LP on NA and 1,347 LP on KR. It is never less than 400 LP in Solo/Duo.
Is Grandmaster the top 500 players?
No. On EUW, NA, KR and SEA there are 700 Grandmaster and 300 Challenger seats, so the two tiers hold the top 1,000 players of the region. BR, EUNE, TR, LAN and LAS have 500 and 200; JP, RU and OCE 100 and 50.
When does the Grandmaster and Challenger ladder update?
Once every 24 hours, at a different time in each region. Riot does not publish it; each region's page shows the time of the last update we saw and the next one we expect, in UTC.
What is the minimum LP for Grandmaster and Challenger?
400 LP for Grandmaster and 800 LP for Challenger in Solo/Duo since Season 2 2026. Flex still uses 200 and 500 LP.
Why am I above the cutoff but still not Challenger?
Seats only change at the daily ladder update. If you are above the projected cutoff when it runs, you get the seat then; until that moment you stay in your current tier.
Does decay affect the cutoff?
Yes, a little. Apex players who stop playing lose 75 LP a day once their bank of days runs out, which can lower the cutoff, but active players usually push it up faster.
Is there a cutoff for Flex queue?
Yes. Flex has its own seats and minimums (200 LP for Grandmaster, 500 LP for Challenger). In smaller regions such as JP, OCE and RU it has fewer apex players than seats, so the cutoff is the minimum itself. Switch the table to Flex to see every region.
